Sophie
SNIP Director Sophie came into post on in March 2009.
Sophie has two children, Adam (aged nearly 14) and Miriam (aged nearly 4). Adam was born with a cleft palate and neurological difficulties. He was recently diagnosed with autism. Adam loves music, humour and eccentric characters (Toad in Wind in the Willows, Mr Scrooge in Muppet Christmas Carol and Baroness Schrader in Sound of Music).
Sophie has worked for 12 years in the voluntary sector in Scotland mainly for projects relating to children with disabilities. This included five years on the management committee of Contact a Family Scotland, and a close involvement in the setting up of Enquire. Most recently, she worked for the Multiple Sclerosis Society as Policy and Campaigns Manager with responsibility for campaigning for a standard of care for neurological conditions. Amongst other duties, she contributed to a photographic exhibition of people with MS which toured Scotland’s galleries, and an annual information event for young people which takes place in Glasgow’s Science Centre. Sophie was a volunteer for ENABLE Scotland for eight years, recently stepping down from the board. For the last eighteen months she has been Chair of Shakti Women’s Aid which is based in Edinburgh. Further back into the past, Sophie worked on a research project about health of people from black and minority groups in Bristol.
Sophie and her husband, Tom Salter, have been building their house in the Pentland Hills for the last thirteen years. During the summer Tom is often away on tour with the Skye folk band, the Peatbog Faeries. This presents a bit of a childcare challenge. Let’s hope they have a hit CD – they won’t need to look far for a good cause!
